The Public Meetings and Public Records Division is under Carson City Clerk - Recorder William "Scott" Hoen and is located at the Courthouse, 885 East Musser Street, Suite 1032, Carson City, Nevada.

The Public Meetings and Public Records Department is responsible for the creation and maintenance of accurate, accessible, and permanent records of the meetings of the Carson City Board of Supervisors and other boards, commissions, and committees, either authorized by statute or created by and advisory to the Board of Supervisors.

The Carson City Clerk is responsible for the management and preservation of Carson City's public records on any and all media, including paper, microfilm, magnetic tape, punched cards, maps and drawings.

How long will it take to obtain the records?

Your request will be processed in compliance with the Nevada Public Records Act (Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 239). As such, the city department which has legal custody or control of the public record being requested will provide a response no later than the end of the fifth business day after the request was submitted.

The response will provide:
(1) the public record requested, if readily available; OR
(2) a date and time after which the public record will be available, if the request will require additional time to fulfill; OR
(3) an explanation as to why the City does not have legal custody or control of the requested record; OR
(4) a denial of the request with the legal authority which makes the requested record confidential, and thus prevents disclosure.

What records can be requested?

Pursuant to NRS 239.121, local government records include “any documents, instruments, papers, books, pamphlets or any other records of writings of a local governmental entity,” unless otherwise declared by law to be confidential. If the City determines that the requested records are confidential, the request will be denied. However, in such an event, the requesting party is entitled to a log identifying the legal basis upon which the denial is based.

How much does it cost for a record?

The City is entitled to recover its actual costs in providing a copy of the public record to the requestor. These costs may include the actual costs incurred in providing the response such as toner, paper, and postage, but will not include an employee’s time, unless the request is extraordinary. If the actual cost for the requested documents is expected to be over $25.00, the requestor will receive a written notice. If any cost is imposed for a public records request, it must be paid in full prior to the production of records.
